Call for Submissions from Writers of Color
Project artist Kemba Opio is currently accepting submissions for written work in creative form.
Submissions may be a poem, thought, verse or an idea! $500 to the winning entry.
Must be a positive statement in 50 words or less on the theme, “What does the Central District mean to you?”
The Central District is one of the oldest diverse residential areas in Seattle and historically known as a culturally rich hub of the African-American community. Amid new projects continually changing the landscape, it’s essential for a community to have a voice that can share its own story.
Community House has commissioned Contemporary Artist Kemba Opio to create a permanent piece of site-specific public artwork on the Jackson Heights building.
Opio will creatively incorporate the selected piece of written work to complement her visual artwork, titled “From the Past to the Present, Creates the Future.”
We are encouraging submissions from Central District residents but this call for submissions is open to all King County residents.Writers of color only.People 18 years old and up.
Only one entry per person. It must be an original work that has not been previously published.
The selected winner will receive a cash prize of $500 and have their written work integrated into the permanent piece of public artwork with credit to the author.
How to Submit Your Entry
To apply, please send your written entry, plus contact information to include: Name, Phone Number, Email, Current Address and Link to Social Media if you have one to firstname.lastname@example.org with “Central District” in the subject line.
Submissions accepted Wednesday, October 30 through Saturday November 30, 2019.
Please note, selected winner will need to submit a photo and a short bio for promotional use.
